ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
- The People’s Quilt Project is a guided, participatory workshop that invites individuals to explore personal and collective identity through storytelling and textile art. Rooted in the idea that embroidery carries our lived narratives, this experience creates space to reflect on lineage, place, and belonging while contributing to a shared creative work.
Through a series of gentle connection exercises, partner dialogues, and guided reflection, participants are invited to trace their own story—how they arrived here, what they carry from their ancestors, and how their experiences shape their present moment. This process centers deep listening, presence, and the practice of witnessing one another without judgment.
From this foundation, participants translate their reflections into stitched expressions, co-creating a patchwork quilt from decommissioned American flags. This shared material serves as a common ground, holding the complexity of individual stories within a collective fabric. Together, the quilt becomes an evolving portrait of who we are—past, present, and future.
No prior sewing or artistic experience is necessary. Participants are encouraged to come with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to engage both personally and communally.
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
- Ashlin McAndrew is a visual artist whose work explores national identity, technological progress, and our relationship to the natural world. Drawing on her training as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, she creates spaces for reflection, embodiment, and collective witnessing through art-making.
